Shopping experience of a special kind

At Rüsselsheim-Bauschheim, Germany’s most modern Globus hypermarket recently opened in autumn of 2016. Designed as communicative and attractive marketplace, it invites not only to buying but also to strolling, trying and staying. Warm colours, light woods as well as specially produced porcelain stoneware tiles of the brand Agrob Buchtal lend the hypermarket an ambience which turns shopping into an experience.

The completely independent family-owned enterprise invested approximately 40 million euros in the new concept of the hypermarket. The result is an excellent mix of catering and food supermarket at which freshness and Front Cooking play an important part. This intention is realized by various culinary stations arranged in the style of a marketplace. The “Genuss-Manufaktur“, for example, offers hand-made pizzas, pasta meals and sauces. At a Bistro, fresh sushi are formed, and the in-house bakery demonstrates its skills in an open bakehouse. The dishes can be enjoyed directly on location in a pleasant atmosphere or taken away and eaten at home. Wide corridors permit a comfortable shopping of the approximately 60,000 to 80,000 food and non-food articles permanently offered. A peculiarity is the label “Gutes von Hier“ (regional goods). There, the customers exclusively find products of manufacturers situated within a radius of 40 kilometres from the hypermarket.

To keep the shopping experience at a high level in the long term, Globus - with the participation of the management and under the responsibility of Jaqueline Tennie (Head of Corporate Identity and Store Construction) - was looking for a floor covering combining an attractive look and high robustness before finally charging store designers and shopfitters with the concrete realization. After intensive product tests and an economic efficiency calculation based on facts (at which both the acquisition and the follow-up or maintenance costs were taken into consideration), one decided in favour of ceramic tiles of the brand Agrob Buchtal: the proven porcelain stoneware series New Market (version Unique) is not only an extremely stress-resistant floor covering, but the look was also exactly adapted to the design specifications of Globus within the framework of a special production. “To avoid an unintentional competition with the large selection of products and dishes, we deliberately chose tiles with a discreet, noble look. The result is the basis and the setting for an attractive staging of our assortment at any time“, Josef Donsbach, manager of Globus Rüsselsheim, explains.

The “extra thick“ ceramic tiles with a thickness of 15 millimetres withstand, for example, the driving of forklift and elevating trucks or similar “rolling loads“ on the covering and are convincing thanks to further advantages. Floors in the retail sector have to be visually attractive and at the same time easy to clean and care for despite being heavily frequented. The Protecta upgrading durably baked onto the tile surface already in-plant makes an important contribution to that: it prevents the penetration of substances forming stains without time-consuming subsequent impregnation and thus facilitates the maintenance cleaning - day after day.

In total, more than 12,000 square metres of Agrob Buchtal tiles of the series New Market (version Unique) in the colour mud-brown and the format of 30x60 centimetres were used. The laying was carried out by the so-called vibration method. At this special procedure, the bedding mortar is precompressed and evenly levelled. On it, a so-called cement slurry is applied as contact layer. After that, the ceramic tiles are pressed in this bed by repeated crosswise driving over them with vibrating special surface vibrators adjusted to a defined force, while the bed itself is compressed in this way at the same time. This multistage procedure ensures a cavity-free bond at which the ceramic covering and the base form a compact entity. This results in numerous advantages such as surface flatness, great stability, excellent durability, high weight carrying capacity and, last but not least, cost effectiveness and aesthetics, as the covering can be efficiently cleaned by means of machines and thus always looks perfect.

Therefore, this is an intelligent and long-lasting solution which is convincing not only by its elegant look but also by the often quoted “return on investment“. Thanks to the in-plant rectification (precise grinding to accurate size), the dimensions of the tiles are so exact that they could be laid with very narrow and filigree joints. Thus, the large floor surface conveys a sovereign, homogeneous and unobtrusive impression, but at the same time is perceivable as elementary part of the sophisticated overall concept.
