Vienna Thermal Baths

Stones in the stream

Vienna is the proud home to one of the most modern city thermal baths in Europe. The Vienna Thermal Baths – a spa world extraordinaire – offers its visitors 22 indoor and outdoor pools with a total water area of 4,000 m² and a sauna landscape spanning 3,000 m². The ensemble of buildings planned by Büro 4a Architekten in Stuttgart is broken down into five areas of experience reminiscent of stones which follow the meanders of an imaginary stream.

Depending on individual preferences, guests can opt for the “Beauty Stone”, the “Peace Stone”, the “Experience Stone”, the “Sauna Stone” or the “Fitness Stone”. Two thermal springs ensure pleasant water temperatures which can reach up to 36 °C depending on the pool.

In the individual areas, extra-wide, tyre and fun slides, cave pools, bubble pools, Finish saunas, steam baths, diving platforms and massage loungers ensure great variety. This range is rounded off by a spacious restaurant area, beauty zone, cinema and Austria's first thermal bath library. This exclusive variety is appreciated by both Viennese residents and visitors to the city: it was able to celebrate a million visitors after only 15 months. And the outdoor pools with sunbathing areas merging into the adjacent park landscape soon developed to become an attraction. During the summer of 2013 with its record temperatures, 178,000 guests found refreshment here from June to August. On the last Sunday of July alone, 3,700 visitors enjoyed temperatures of up to 37 °C. Yet it never felt overcrowded as confirmed by a survey among visitors that year: 95% claimed they would recommend the thermal baths to others.

Established in 1990, the architectural agency whose primary focus includes sports and recreational buildings, including several thermal bath complexes, consistently relied on swimming pool ceramics offered by AGROB BUCHTAL. For example, pool walls and floors were tiled using Chroma II in various colors and sizes. All pools feature the Wiesbaden pool edge system customised in black. Notches guarantee a visually perfect transition to the pool wall surface. And the benches featuring mosaics from the Plural series are convincing thanks to their individual designs: ceramic radial strips with a radius of 30 mm create elegantly rounded front edges providing optimum seating comfort while preventing injury.
