Infrastructure Reimagined – Precision, Materiality, and Context

With the Union Railway Station in Melbourne, a transportation facility has been created that goes far beyond its functional role. As the new hub for the Belgrave and Lilydale lines, the station connects the neighborhoods of Mont Albert and Surrey Hills and exemplifies contemporary infrastructure that harmonizes technology, design, and the urban context.

Redefining the Urban Landscape
Opened in 2023, the station replaces two previously separate train stops whose locations on curved tracks no longer met current safety requirements. As part of the “Level Crossing Removal Project,” the stops were consolidated and strategically repositioned. The measure not only improves operational efficiency but also resolves a long-standing traffic problem: crossing gates with long closing times previously caused significant delays in road traffic. Today, both public transportation and over 22,000 vehicles daily benefit from significantly smoother and safer traffic flow.

Architecture between Precision and Restraint
The design by Hassell Architecture relies on a clear, minimalist design language. Multi-layered canopies, finely tuned proportions, and a restrained choice of materials create a calm architectural presence. The open, light-filled structure promotes both orientation and a pleasant atmosphere. At the same time, the project is seamlessly integrated into its surroundings. A comprehensive landscape design featuring tens of thousands of newly planted trees and shrubs reinforces the site’s green character and connects the infrastructure with the surrounding urban space.

Modularity and Material as a Design Strategy
A central element of the project is the modular structures for waiting areas, service areas, and security facilities. These were prefabricated off-site, including the ceramic facade cladding, and subsequently assembled on-site. This approach exemplifies a precise, efficient construction method and minimizes disruption to ongoing operations. The facades of these modules are clad with ceramic tiles from the Craft series in a striking jade green. The choice of a uniform material creates a clear visual identity and unites the different functions into a single architectural whole.

Texture and Depth in the Surface
The profiled surfaces of the ceramictiles used lend the building structures a subtle plasticity. The combination of smooth tiles and variants with a V-profile creates a finely tuned interplay of light and shadow. The ratio of approximately 10:1 ensures a calm overall effect without sacrificing differentiation. The ceramic surfaces not only meet design requirements but also functional ones: they are robust, easy to maintain, and durable—properties that are essential in the high-traffic environment of a train station.

A Place with New Quality
Union Station is an infrastructure project that convincingly combines functionality and architectural sophistication. The careful selection of materials, the precise execution, and the sensitive integration into the landscape context result in a place that transcends mere transit activity. Thus, the station becomes an integral part of the public space—open, clearly structured, and with a design that harmonizes permanence with contemporary architecture.
