The new Therme Oberstdorf in the Allgäu region is a wellness and health center that combines alpine architecture, sustainable construction, and high-quality materials. Designed by Auer Weber Architects, the new building blends sensitively into the mountain landscape with clearly structured volumes, gabled roofs, and a vertically structured wooden façade. Inside, ceramic tiles and architectural ceramics from Agrob Buchtal ensure functional quality, design clarity, and long-term safety.
The new thermal baths replace the former facility and develop a spatial concept that combines wellness, sports, and relaxation. Spanning approximately 9,400 m², the complex features a thermal bath area, sauna and wellness zones, and dining facilities. Large glass surfaces open the bathing hall to the landscape and create impressive views of the Allgäu Alps.
Architecture in dialogue with the alpine landscape
Architecturally, the new building is conceived as an ensemble of staggered structures whose sloping roofs draw on regional building traditions and interpret them in a contemporary manner. The building layout responds to the topography and surroundings, while the glass-enclosed swimming hall forms the spatial center. Wood, concrete, and glass characterize a serene interior design that directs the focus toward water and the landscape. Different functional areas are clearly structured yet interconnected. Colors and materials draw inspiration from the natural environment of the Allgäu and translate its character into a consistent design concept. The idea of the four elements serves as a leitmotif, reflected in the distinct material and color palettes of the various functional areas.
Ceramic surfaces as part of the spatial concept
The gray of the surrounding mountain landscape sets the tone. With its calm, consistent surfaces, the Nova series creates a robust yet precise architectural foundation. At the same time, it meets the high requirements for slip resistance and durability in a bathing environment. The basins reflect the colors of the Allgäu mountain lakes: subtly graded turquoise shades from the Chroma series create a vibrant interplay of light, depth, and movement. This is complemented by ceramic molded parts and overflow channels from the Wiesbaden system, which ensure functional aspects such as hygiene and drainage. The children’s pool and relaxation areas also reflect the natural color palette—with Loop round mosaics in a range of colors from fresh blues and greens to light, mineral-inspired shades. In the sauna’s relaxation area, inspired by the Breitachklamm gorge, an atmospheric ambience is created. The color palette of the Craft series brick slips – including Flamed Olive, Benit Blue, Dark Gray, and Hematite Black—echoes the rugged rock formations, the subdued light, and the cool freshness of the gorge.
Aesthetic and ecological sustainability
In addition to its architectural quality, the project stands out for its sustainable energy concept featuring photovoltaics, efficient building technology, and heat recovery. Durable ceramic materials support this approach through their robustness, ease of maintenance, and hygienic properties. The new Therme Oberstdorf thus creates a space that harmoniously combines architecture, landscape, and materials into a cohesive whole, while convincingly meeting the functional requirements of modern swimming pool architecture.
