A Place for Community – Functionality with Architectural Clarity

The new elementary and middle school building in Rott am Inn is an educational facility that combines the need for contemporary learning spaces with a clear architectural vision. The new facility replaces the aging existing building and creates space for approximately 360 students—as a place for learning, interaction, and community life.

Structure and Atmosphere in the Educational Building “
The design by Putzhammer + Meier Architects aims to create a “feel-good building” that combines functional requirements with a pleasant spatial atmosphere. Clear structures, well-proportioned circulation areas, and bright, welcoming spaces characterize the building. Entrance areas, stairwells, and common areas are designed to provide orientation while also creating a pleasant environment for spending time.

Materials in everyday use
The choice of materials plays a central role here: A total of approximately 1,500 m² of ceramic tiles are used in high-traffic areas such as stairwells, entrances, restroom areas, and the kitchen. The decision to use ceramic flooring was based on both functional and design criteria. The design of the staircases is particularly noteworthy: stair treads were manufactured in a single piece without joints. This solution not only ensures a calm, precise appearance but also improves ease of cleaning and durability in daily school operations.

Robustness and Design Understatement
The ceramic products used combine high durability with an understated, timeless design. Especially in the high-traffic environment of a school building—with heavy foot traffic and diverse demands—the advantages of durable, low-maintenance materials become apparent. At the same time, they support a clear architectural language that conveys calm and stability. The choice was deliberately made to use a comprehensive system that combines functional safety with a pleasant, unobtrusive aesthetic, thereby reinforcing the character of the building.

A New Building with a Vision
After approximately two and a half years of construction, the school opened on schedule in 2023—a project that was completed on time and within budget despite challenging conditions. The new building, funded by the Free State of Bavaria, now forms the new center of the “school family” for the communities of Rott, Griesstätt, and Ramerberg. The result is a space that spatially supports the daily routines of learning, living, and socializing—clearly structured, robust in its details, and constructed with materials that will meet long-term requirements.
