The Kaunas Arena Pool is an interior design concept that deliberately takes a back seat, thereby revealing its architectural precision. Nestled on a natural island in the Nemunas River and in the immediate vicinity of the arena, the swimming pool sees itself as part of a larger spatial context – subtle, minimalist, and clearly focused on use.
At the center are the water features: a 50-meter competition pool, training areas, and recreational pools. Their design follows a consistent material concept, which was implemented across approximately 5,000 m² of ceramic tiles. Series such as Loop Mosaics, Chroma Plural, and elements from the special range are used—coordinated in nuanced shades of blue and gray. This color scheme enhances the visibility of the pools while creating a calm, visually cohesive atmosphere.
Notable is the choice of the 12.5 × 12.5 cm format, which is rather atypical for the Lithuanian market. It allows for precise detailing of the surfaces and supports the scale of the architecture. Floors and walls are designed to be open-plan, and transitions appear both natural and functional. Complementary accent colors add subtle highlights without disrupting the desired restraint of the overall design.
Harmonious integration across the board
The choice of a uniform ceramic system contributes significantly to the clarity of the design. All tiles are from Agrob Buchtal, enabling a consistent aesthetic combined with high technical performance. Slip resistance, hygiene, and durability reliably meet the demands of intensive swimming pool use. Structurally, too, the project exhibits a distinctive character: The building is embedded in the landscape, the roof is designed as a green surface, and is barely perceptible from a bird’s-eye view. The result is a structure that does not thrust itself into the foreground, but rather creates a balanced relationship between architecture, function, and surroundings.
