Our new prefabricated components for the refurbishment of ageing pool heads ensure construction processes that are as simple and time-saving as possible. Furthermore, they enable durable, resource-efficient and therefore sustainable refurbishment solutions.
The importance the German government attaches to the refurbishment of outdoor swimming pools is demonstrated by the federal programme “Refurbishment of Municipal Sports Facilities”, launched in 2026, which provides funding of 250 million euros in federal funds for measures to refurbish municipal swimming pools. Project durations of up to six years are envisaged. The federal programme aims to support local authorities in clearing the existing backlog of refurbishment work on indoor and outdoor swimming pools. Project processes that accelerate the individual refurbishments will now be crucial.
In collaboration with CARBOCON, Agrob Buchtal developed a completely new solution for the refurbishment of pool heads: a pool head completely prefabricated with tiles and a core of carbon-reinforced concrete.
The prefabrication of the pool heads under controlled and quality-monitored workshop conditions enables energy- and resource-efficient production processes and minimized waste quantities - and a product quality that cannot be achieved on construction sites. However, the construction processes on site are also much simpler with the prefabricated parts, as complicated work steps and the involvement of many different trades are no longer necessary. The overall construction time is also reduced because there is no need to form, pour and dry the in-situ concrete. To further improve the carbon footprint, we rely on short delivery routes and use reusable formwork to produce the precast elements.
In order to be able to install the prefabricated parts, which are usually 2.5 m long, the old pool heads, regardless of manufacturer or type, are first sawn out of the pool edge. The result is precise horizontal and vertical cut edges, ...
... onto which - after pre-treatment of the cut steel reinforcement and sealing of the cut surface - the new prefabricated basin heads are simply placed in mortar. The position of existing channel drains is measured on a project-specific basis and taken into account during the production of the prefabricated parts.
Finally, the connection work to the pool surround (e.g. capillary barrier) and to the pool tiles is carried out. As the transition to the existing pool tiles - if these are retained - is well below the water level, any differences in the color of the tiles and joints are barely noticeable, so that the pool head and pool appear as a unit as before.
