POOL HEAD: As prefabricated part ceramic - in the core carbon concrete

The new prefabricated parts from AGROB BUCHTAL for the refurbishment of aging pool heads ensure very simple and time-saving construction processes. Moreover, they enable durable and resource-efficient and thus sustainable refurbishment solutions.

Carbon concrete - a sustainable solution

In cooperation with the engineering service provider CARBOCON from Dresden, experienced in the innovative building material carbon concrete, AGROB BUCHTAL developed a completely new renovation solution: a pool head completely prefabricated with tiles and with a core made of carbon reinforced concrete. The space requirement of this pool head is minimal, because carbon concrete allows the production of extremely filigree and yet highly load-bearing components. These require less cement, sand and water, enabling a significantly improved carbon footprint. Unlike conventional steel reinforcements, carbon fibers are also resistant to all aggressive media, making components made of carbon concrete extremely robust and durable.

Advantages of prefabrication
Prefabrication of the pool heads under controlled and quality-monitored workshop conditions enables energy- and resource-efficient production processes and minimized waste volumes - and a product quality that cannot be achieved on construction sites. But on-site construction processes are also much simpler with precast elements, because complicated work steps and the involvement of many different trades are eliminated. In addition, the overall construction time is reduced because forming, pouring and drying of the in-situ concrete are no longer required. To further improve the carbon footprint, we rely on short delivery routes and have the precast elements manufactured with reusable formwork.

Pool heads as ceramic precast elements: quick and easy to install onsite
To be able to install the precast elements, which are usually 2.5 m long, the old pool heads, regardless of manufacturer or type, are first sawn out of the pool edge. The result is precise horizontal and vertical cut edges onto which - after pre-treatment of cut steel reinforcement and sealing of the cut surface - the new prefabricated pool heads are simply placed in mortar. The position of existing gutter drains is measured for the specific project and taken into account in the production of the precast elements. Finally, the connection work to the pool perimeter (such as capillary barrier) and to the pool tiles is carried out. Since the transition to the existing pool tiles - provided they are retained - is well below the water level, any color differences between tiles and joints are hardly noticeable, so that the pool head and pool appear as a single unit as before.

Just how important the renovation of outdoor pools is to the German government is demonstrated by the "Renovation of Municipal Facilities in the Areas of Sports, Youth and Culture" funding program launched by Construction Minister Klara Geywitz. From the 2022 budget alone, €476 million in funding was allocated. With the funds of this program so far altogether 148 local projects are to be rehabilitated climaticcompatibly - within the range swimming pools is allotted the largest part of the promotion sum to outdoor swimming pools.
