In the Nacka Strand development area, east of central Stockholm, a residential project has been created that consistently translates the site’s unique topography into architecture. Surrounding a striking rocky hill, a development has taken shape that does not level the existing differences in elevation but rather consciously uses them as a design element.
Architecture evolved from the landscape
The challenge posed by the highly variable terrain elevations became the starting point for the design. Instead of reshaping the topography, the buildings respond to the gradations and form a differentiated volumetry from them. This results in buildings whose height and orientation are guided by natural conditions while simultaneously keeping their impact on the street as minimal and unobtrusive as possible.
Materiality with Depth
A defining element of the project is the façade design featuring glazed ceramic elements. Already incorporated in the competition design, this material choice was consistently implemented. Ceramic tiles from the Craft series are used on approximately 3,600 m² of facade surface, lending the building volumes a vibrant, iridescent surface. The ceramic cladding reacts sensitively to light and the surroundings, enhancing the sculptural effect of the staggered volumes. At the same time, it offers a robust and durable solution for this demanding residential project.
Integrating rather than dominating
The project demonstrates how architecture can evolve from the conditions of the site. Through the precise coordination of volume, materiality, and topography, a residential ensemble emerges that blends naturally into the landscape while simultaneously formulating its own distinct architectural identity.
