The new public library in Round Rock is a building that goes far beyond the traditional role of a repository of knowledge. As a central element of urban development, it combines education, community interaction, and public engagement into an open, versatile space within the urban fabric.
Urban Integration and Identity
Located just one block from the historic downtown, the library sees itself as a natural extension of the area. The building occupies an entire city block and responds to the heterogeneous surroundings—comprising residential buildings, small commercial structures, and urban infrastructure—with four distinctively designed facades. The material palette, featuring earthy tones, draws on the regional building tradition of limestone and clay, visibly anchoring the building in the local context.
Space for Diversity and Flexibility
Spanning approximately 67,000 square meters, the three-story complex offers a wide range of uses: from classic reading areas to technology centers and maker spaces, to flexibly usable event and learning spaces. Dedicated areas for children and young people, as well as specialized zones such as a genealogy section, expand the offerings and specifically cater to different user groups. The spaces are deliberately designed to be open and adaptable in order to respond to future needs. Large glass surfaces create bright interior spaces and establish a visual connection to the surrounding landscape.
Architecture in Dialogue with Nature and the City
A defining element of the design is the integration of an existing tree, which becomes the spatial focal point of the library. Central gathering areas develop around it, interweaving the interior and exterior spaces. This is complemented by terraces and open spaces that offer a variety of recreational experiences and strengthen the connection to the surroundings.
Connectivity and Accessibility
The library is closely integrated into the urban infrastructure. An integrated parking garage with 300 spaces is connected to the building via a direct link and enhances accessibility for visitors. A public courtyard serves as a connecting element and is already designed with future urban developments in mind.
A Place for the Community
Since its opening in January 2023, the library has established itself as a central meeting place. It combines education, technology, and social interaction, thereby creating a place that strengthens the community while simultaneously opening up new perspectives on the use of public spaces.
