The new S-building for Satapsykiatria in Pori is a healthcare facility that combines functional requirements with a clear architectural language. Spanning approximately 21,650 m², the complex brings together a variety of uses—from psychiatric wards for adults, children, and adolescents, through outpatient clinics, to therapy facilities and a clinical school—thereby creating a nuanced environment for treatment and care.
Balance of Structure and Use
The building’s layout reflects the complexity of its uses. Inpatient and outpatient areas are clearly structured and at the same time functionally interconnected. Complementary facilities such as therapy departments and specialized treatment areas expand the spectrum and enable holistic care within a cohesive architectural framework.
The facade as an identity-defining element
The building’s exterior appearance is significantly shaped by ceramic facade panels. KeraTwin® elements in coordinated colors such as cream, iron gray, black, and ochre are used. A special 3D profiling gives the facade depth and a lively texture that creates different effects depending on the angle of the light. The varying formats—with different heights and lengths—allow for a nuanced division of the surfaces. The result is a façade that, despite its scale, retains a human scale and lends the building a calm yet striking identity.
Materiality and technical precision
The ceramic façade elements represent a combination of design flexibility and technical performance. Different surfaces, formats, and color tones can be individually combined and support precise architectural detailing. At the same time, the panels meet high standards for durability and ease of maintenance. A special surface finish provides self-cleaning properties, thereby contributing to long-term cost-effective operation. The efficient installation using a clamping system underscores the project’s systematic approach.
A building with a clear identity
The Satapsykiatria S-building demonstrates how complex medical requirements can be translated into a clear architectural structure. The combination of functional organization, sophisticated materiality, and precise execution creates an environment that meets both operational requirements and the needs of the users. The result is a healthcare facility that impresses with its clarity, durability, and carefully selected materials.
