The new Keon Park Station in Melbourne is a transportation facility that combines technical requirements with architectural quality. As part of the Level Crossing Removal Project, the railway line was elevated, the existing overpass was removed, and the station was completely redesigned. The result is a modern, elevated station that redefines the public space and sustainably improves connectivity for the Reservoir neighborhood.
Architecture and Execution in Harmony
Wood Marsh’s design takes a holistic approach in which design, construction, and use are closely intertwined. A striking feature is the custom-developed tile layout, which required a high degree of precision in both planning and execution. The implementation took place in close coordination between the planning team, the material supplier, and the contractor—a process that consistently translates the design concept into built reality.
Materials for High Demands
Especially in the contextof public infrastructure, materials are subjected to high stresses. Accordingly, the choice fell on ceramic tiles that meet both design and functional requirements. The Chroma tiles used are characterized by high resistance to mechanical stress, weathering, and vandalism, thus ensuring long-term, stable quality.
Surfaces with Added Value
A key element is the Hytect® surface of the ceramic tiles. This special finish gives the tiles self-cleaning and air-purifying properties. A photocatalytic reaction reduces organic contaminants, microorganisms, and pollutants, while a hydrophilic surface ensures that water drains evenly and dirt is removed more easily. For operations, this means significantly less cleaning effort and reduced maintenance costs—a major advantage in high-traffic facilities such as train stations.
Sustainability through Durability
In addition to the energy efficiency of the building itself, the durability of the materials used plays a central role in the sustainability concept. The ceramic surfaces retain their functionality and aesthetics over a long period of time without losing quality. This not only minimizes maintenance requirements but also contributes to trouble-free operation.
A Contribution to the Urban Landscape
Since its opening in 2024, Keon Park Station has integrated itself into the urban environment as a new, clearly structured element. It not only improves mobility but also creates a space of architectural quality—robust, precisely designed, and built to last.
