Narre Warren Station in Melbourne is a transportation facility that combines functional requirements with a clear architectural identity. As part of a comprehensive infrastructure modernization, the station was redesigned and now forms a high-quality, well-structured hub in public space.
Architecture and Use in Harmony
The design by Denton Corker Marshall focuses on a precise organization of functions and clear spatial legibility. Waiting areas, service areas, and amenities are logically arranged, creating intuitive orientation for users. At the same time, a designed forecourt helps integrate the station into the urban context and reinforces it as a place to linger.
Facade as a defining element
A characteristic feature of the project is the facade design using ceramic elements from the KeraShape® system. Vertically arranged, rod-shaped ceramic elements—so-called “baguettes”—create a three-dimensional structure that brings depth and rhythm to the building’s exterior. Through careful arrangement, an interplay of openness and closure emerges that meets both functional and design requirements. A particular challenge lay in achieving a „floating“ facade effect, in which the elements were mounted at a distance from the supporting structure. This required precise coordination of planning and execution to achieve the desired lightness of the structure.
Materials for intensive use
Especially in the context of public transportation infrastructure, materials must withstand the highest demands. The ceramic façade elements used are characterized by high resistance to mechanical stress, weathering, and vandalism. At the same time, they allow for easy maintenance and provide access to the installations behind them. This is complemented by a special surface finish that supports self-cleaning properties and helps reduce soiling. This minimizes long-term maintenance requirements and ensures the facade’s quality over the long term.
A Clear Contribution to the Urban Landscape
Narre Warren Station demonstrates how infrastructure projects can evolve into identity-defining places through precise design and thoughtful material selection. The combination of functional efficiency, structural clarity, and an expressive facade language creates a building that extends beyond its mere function—as an integral part of the public space.
