Porseleinenhof

Urban Living Reimagined – Identity, Materiality, and Community

The Porseleinen Hof in Delft is a residential project that continues the dialogue between history and the present in a precise architectural manner. Located in the Nieuw Delft development area, the design by Orange Architects draws on the city’s industrial past and translates it into a contemporary, community-oriented form of housing.

Architecture in the Context of the Site
The name says it all: “Porseleinen Hof” refers directly to Delft’s ceramic heritage. Accordingly, a facade of white-glazed and matte ceramic elements defines the building’s appearance. The buildings appear different depending on the perspective and develop a sculptural presence in the urban space.

Instead of a monolithic structure, the project is divided into several interlocking volumes. Different heights, angles, and proportions create a nuanced scale that sensitively integrates into the surroundings while simultaneously setting a striking urban accent.

Materiality with Reference and Future
The ceramic facades are more than a design reference—they are an integral part of a sustainable building concept. Removable facade elements allow for future reuse, while the timber-frame construction reduces the environmental impact. In this way, the choice of materials combines historical connections with future-oriented requirements.

Community as a Design Principle
At the heart of the project is a spacious courtyard that serves as a social gathering place. The surrounding residential units are deliberately designed to open up to this communal space, while balconies, terraces, and rooftop gardens offer individual retreats. The mix of townhouses and apartments of various sizes creates a diverse resident structure and fosters a vibrant neighborhood.

Sustainability and urban mobility
Sustainability is consistently taken to the next level: rooftop gardens support biodiversity and rainwater management, photovoltaic systems contribute to the energy supply, and an innovative system uses environmental energy for heating and cooling. This concept is complemented by a streamlined mobility offering featuring car-sharing and extensive bicycle parking facilities—a conscious contribution to CO₂ reduction.

A new building block in the urban fabric
The Porseleinen Hof connects the historic city center with the new neighborhoods west of the railway line and serves as a prominent building block in the urban fabric. The project demonstrates how density, identity, and quality of life can be combined—through architecture that integrates materials, use, and context into a harmonious whole.
