Building in a Historical Context – Living Between the Past and the Present
The Chateau Troja Residence in Prague is a residential complex that consistently fosters a dialogue between historical architecture and contemporary living. In the Troja district, in the immediate vicinity of the Baroque castle and nestled among vineyards, Atelier Loxia transformed a former 17th-century estate into a high-quality residential complex with a clear architectural vision.
The project is based on a heterogeneous ensemble of 13 buildings in total, some of which could be preserved in their original state. The renovation posed significant challenges: decades of decay and flood damage required innovative structural solutions and a precise balance between preservation and enhancement. The goal was to visibly preserve the historical qualities—such as vaults, roof shapes, and proportions—while simultaneously enabling contemporary use.
Architecture between Old and New
The new structures blend sensitively into the existing fabric and are connected by Baroque-inspired mansard roofs. The result is an ensemble that is perceived as a unified whole without sacrificing the individual character of the separate buildings. Special attention has been paid to the facades: historical elements such as dormers and vaulted structures have been preserved and combined with modern components. At the same time, a high technical standard—such as private elevators leading directly from the underground garage to the apartment—ensures a high level of living comfort.
Landscape as an Integral Part
The spectrum ranges from compact apartments to spacious penthouses with private terraces, wellness areas, and wine cellars. The apartments face the landscape and offer views of the vineyards and Troja Castle.
The outdoor spaces are deliberately designed as an extension of the architecture. Inspired by Baroque gardens, structured green spaces are created with fountains, water basins, and shaded seating areas. Promenades and private gardens create a peaceful, atmospheric environment and connect the individual buildings into a cohesive whole.
An Ensemble with Identity
The Chateau Troja Residence demonstrates how historic buildings can be transformed into a contemporary living concept without losing their character. The combination of careful restoration, precise additions, and modern technology creates a distinctive ensemble—acclaimed by both a panel of experts and the public—and serves as an example of the sensitive handling of built history in an urban context.
