With the Main Bad Bornheim, Frankfurt has gained a sports and water park that combines function, atmosphere, and sustainability into a unique architectural experience. The new building by 4a Architekten replaces the former Panoramabad and creates an open, contemporaryß space for families, recreational swimmers, and school and club sports – embedded in a design concept that gives equal ß space to both exercise and relaxation.
Architecture of Clarity – Spaces for Concentration and Experience
Despite its versatile spatial program, the building appears surprisingly calm and precise. Clear geometries, minimalist forms, and a deliberately understated choice of materials create an atmosphere that focuses on light, water, and space. Generous glazing opens up views of the surroundings and brings natural light deep into the swimming pools. The approximately 900 m² of water surface is divided into different areas for leisure, sports, and recreation. Floor-to-ceiling glazing between the recreational and competition areas not only creates visual transparency but also ensures a pleasant acoustic separation—allowing focused swimming and lively family areas to function in parallel without interfering with one another.
Playful Underwater Worlds
A central theme of the design is the idea of the „jungle“, which has been atmospherically brought to life, particularly in the children’s area. Custom-made ceramic mosaic images create a lively, playful environment and give the water features their own identity. Tile mosaics in väivid shades of blue, green, and yellowö set deliberate accents and bring dynamism to the otherwise deliberately minimalist architecture. At the same time, the design remains controlled and clear. Instead of decorative excess, the bathroom relies on a precise balance between an immersive experience and architectural tranquility.
The Sauna as a Retreat
On the upper floor, a spacious sauna area with five different saunas opens up. Here, the atmosphere changes noticeably: light, materials, and the sequence of spaces feel calmer and more introspective, while larger-format tiles add an additional sense of tranquility to the interior design. The sauna serves as a counterpoint to the livelier bathing areas – a place of retreat within the overall concept.
Sustainability as an Integral Part of the
From a technical standpoint as well, the Main Bad Bornheim is designed as a forward-looking building. Its immediate proximity to the ice rink enables the use of waste heat and creates energy synergies. The concept is complemented by photovoltaic modules, heat recovery, and modern systems for ventilation and pool water treatment. The result is a building that is not only architecturally impressive but can also be operated in a resource-efficient manner over the long term.
A new chapter for Frankfurt’s ärchitectural landscape
With the Main Bad Bornheim, Frankfurt is ögaining a public space that goes far beyond the mere function of a swimming pool. The combination of clean architecture, atmospheric design, and sustainable technology creates a facility that feels both lively and relaxed—open to sports, leisure, and shared experiences.
