A water park with an adventure theme
With Rulantica, Europa-Park in Rust has created a water park that combines architecture, themed design and leisure activities into a holistic experience. Opened after just two years of construction, the new building forms the centrepiece of the resort’s expansion and brings the fictional island world of Rulantica to life in an impressive spatial setting. The striking, shell-shaped swimming hall defines the appearance of the complex and makes a strong architectural statement even from the outside.
Architecture as part of the world of experience
Spanning a total area of more than 40,000 m², a varied aquatic landscape unfolds, featuring indoor and outdoor areas that combine different themed worlds into a harmonious overall concept. Inspired by Scandinavian myths and Nordic landscapes, spaces are created that intuitively guide visitors through the various experience zones. Water, light and materials combine to create an atmosphere that is both spectacular and inviting.
In addition to Germany’s largest wave pool, Rulantica features numerous water attractions, slides, lazy rivers and spacious wellness and sauna areas. Despite the high level of functional complexity, the architecture succeeds in providing clear wayfinding and giving each of the different functional areas its own spatial identity.
Sustainability on a grand scale
The project also sets new standards from a technical perspective. The water supply is provided by the park’s own wells, which are fed from the Upper Rhine aquifer. In addition, photovoltaic systems on the car park canopies cover part of the complex’s electricity requirements. In this way, Rulantica combines spectacular leisure architecture with resource-efficient operations and demonstrates how the quality of the visitor experience, technical innovation and sustainable planning can be united into a forward-looking overall concept.
