Renovation of Existing Structures – The Salinarium Is Being Transformed into a Thermal Spa

The expansion of the Salinarium in Bad Dürkheim has created a thermal spa complex that transforms the existing recreational swimming facility into a contemporary health and wellness center. The new building, designed by 4a Architekten, blends into the existing structures while simultaneously creating its own distinct architectural identity. The goal was to connect the recreational pool, thermal spa, and outdoor pool both spatially and functionally, and to give the entire complex a new, high-quality appearance.

Arrive and Dive In
The new entrance area alone conveys the character of the facility. A widely cantilevered roof welcomes visitors with an open gesture and leads into a spacious entrance hall. The wooden façade conveys warmth and naturalness, offering a preview of the spa’s atmosphere. Inside, flowing sequences of spaces and curved lines define the architectural concept. The soft forms provide orientation and guide visitors intuitively through the building. From the entrance hall, visitors can access both the existing areas of the recreational pool and the newly designed changing rooms of the thermal baths. A clear separation between barefoot and shoe areas ensures functional flow, while colorful accents lend the changing areas a friendly and inviting atmosphere.

Architecture in Dialogue with Water and Landscape
A glass-enclosed connecting corridor runs along the west facade into the new thermal hall, creating a seamless transition between the existing structure and the new building. There, curved exposed-concrete walls with colorfully designed seating niches structure the spaces and intuitively guide visitors to the various areas of the facility. The thermal bath complex includes spacious indoor and outdoor pools, a two-story sauna area with a rooftop terrace and sauna garden, as well as wellness and spa offerings. Despite the facility’s size, a calm, harmonious atmosphere emerges that consciously slows down the pace of the visit.

Minimalism as a Design Philosophy
The architecture draws on the scenic qualities of the adjacent spa park and translates them into a clear, timeless design language. Minimalist materials, expansive views, and open spatial sequences create an ambiance that centers on tranquility and a connection to nature. The design deliberately avoids visual clutter and instead relies on the interplay of light, materials, and proportions. Thus, the new Salinarium Therme has become a place that goes far beyond the mere expansion of a recreational pool. The combination of modern architecture, a high-quality visitor experience, and a sensitive integration into the existing structure creates an ensemble that convincingly blends relaxation, health, and architecture.
