With the completion of the renovation of the Bad Egelsee swimming pool in Kreuzlingen, a project has been finalized that focuses on a respectful approach to existing architecture. Following the new extension built in 2023, a delicate, pavilion-like structure now connects the old and the new into a functional and spatial unity. Together, they form a complex that is introverted, organized around a sheltered courtyard, and at the same time clearly demarcated from the adjacent school grounds.
Existing Structure as a Starting Point
The renovation focused on the careful enhancement of the existing qualities. Existing elements such as the sloping wooden ceiling, the large glazing areas, and the characteristic pool surrounds and seating benches along the exterior walls were deliberately preserved and enhanced. The facility’s varying levels also remain clearly discernible and contribute to its spatial identity. The new interventions blend in almost naturally—discreetly, precisely, and in dialogue with the existing structure.
Reorganization and Expansion of Use
At the same time, the facility was functionally reorganized. A clearly structured entrance area with separate school access and modernized changing rooms improve daily operations. Complementary amenities such as a children’s pool, a relaxation room, diving platforms, and a tube slide significantly expand the range of uses and create a contemporary swimming facility.
Materials and Sustainability
The interplay between old and new is supported by a consistent material concept. The reuse of concrete, wood, and ceramics ties in with the original facility and is complemented by the materials of the new building. At the same time, the entire building and pool water technology was updated to ensure energy-efficient and long-term sustainable operation.
A harmonious whole
Thus, Bad Egelsee serves as an example of a renovation that focuses not on contrast, but on continuity. The architectural quality of the existing structure remains evident and is carried into the present through targeted additions – precise, restrained, and in the spirit of forward-looking development.
